Whether it’s “powdering your nose” or settling in for a good read, Americans spend a significant amount of time in the bathroom. According to a recent Yankelovich survey, many Americans spend more than 30 minutes each day in the bathroom that adds up to nearly eight days each year – which is more than double that of the average vacation trip . And contrary to popular belief, men spend almost as much time in the bathroom as women.
The findings were released as part of an effort to examine the bathroom habits of the American consumer and explore the reasons why this previously unrecognized “drain” on consumers’ time may be an indication of larger health issues.

An estimated 33,000 of the total 5.5 million workers in Vietnam’s fishery sector, or about 0.59%, were living with HIV in 2008, according to a survey released Tuesday by Vietnam’s fishery program, VNA/VOV News reports (VNA/VOV News, 5/27). The report also predicted that the number of HIV-positive people in Vietnam’s fishery sector could rise to 58,000 by 2013. According to a second survey, conducted simultaneously, a lack of knowledge about the disease has contributed to the fishery sector’s relatively high HIV prevalence. Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as part of its Strengthening of Fisheries Administration conducted the survey with support from the Danish International Development Agency.

Madeleine Bordallo, the U.S. delegate from Guam, has introduced legislation that would fund a survey to collect health data from Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, the Pacific Daily News reports. The legislation would amend the Public Health Service Act to fund the survey through HHS.
Bordallo said, “Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities are eager to move forward with their efforts to improve public health. This scientific survey would establish baseline health information to inform health policy and interventions so that individual and community health can be properly tracked and evaluated.”

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society announced that new survey results reveal alarming gaps in the public’s awareness of gout, a painful and potentially debilitating form of arthritis that affects three to five million Americans. In a survey of more than 2,000 Americans, 65% of adults admitted to being “not at all knowledgeable” about gout and just over 70% did not know that gout is a form of arthritis. In fact, gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis among adults.

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement launches its first National Innovation and Improvement Survey. Created in partnership with strategic health authorities, the survey offers all NHS staff in the UK an opportunity to influence the national innovation agenda.
The survey has been designed to provide insight into the current challenges faced by frontline NHS staff and better understand what they need to improve patient care. It will give staff the opportunity to feedback on what improvement approaches they are already using, and suggest new ideas about how innovation in the NHS should be encouraged. The results will be used by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and SHAs to prioritise innovation programmes for development over the course of 2010.
