Pixantrone Phase 3 Data To Be Presented At The 2009 American Society Of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI) (Nasdaq and MTA: CTIC) announced that data from CTI’s pivotal phase III EXTEND (PIX301) trial of pixantrone in patients with advanced, relapsed aggressive non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) will be presented at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, which will be held from May 29 to June 2, 2009 in Orlando, Florida.

Ruth Pettengell, M.D. of St. George’s Hospital, University of London, an investigator on the study, is scheduled to present the data on Monday, June 1, 2009 during the Lymphoma and Plasma Cell Disorders session that will be held from 2:00 PM-6:00 PM Eastern Time. The presentation, abstract #8523, is titled, “Randomized Phase III trial of pixantrone compared with other chemotherapeutic agents for third-line single-agent treatment of relapsed aggressive non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.”

Latin American HIV/AIDS Advocacy Group Launches Magazine For Women

The Inter Press Service on Monday examined a new magazine published by the Latin American branch of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS. The magazine — called “No Estas Sola,” or “You Are Not Alone” — focuses on providing HIV-positive women in Latin America with information about the virus, stigma, their rights and empowerment. Maria Mansilla, the editor in charge of the publication, said, “What we are trying to do through the magazine is to break with the weepy approach, where there is only room for complaints or for the scientific-medical perspective.” The magazine is a quarterly publication that is distributed in the 20 Latin American countries where ICW Latina has national chapters. Daniel Barberis, media officer for ICW Latina, said the magazine could be published more frequently in the future.

Some Sexually Transmitted Infections Increasing In South Dakota; Lack Of Education, Health Services On American Indian Reservations Partly To Blame

The number of gonorrhea and chlamydia cases in South Dakota peaked at record levels last year, and HIV/AIDS cases also are on the rise, according to the state Department of Health’s 2008 infectious disease report, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports. The number of chlamydia infections reached an all-time high of 2,948 in 2008, up by 328 since 2007, according to provisional data in the report. Gonorrhea infections increased by 29.4% to 370. There were 34 HIV/AIDS infections reported in 2008, compared with 25 in 2007.

American Veterinary Medical Association Urges Veterinarians To Support National Animal Identification System

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is showing its strong support for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) by urging veterinarians to actively participate in the system and utilize the new Veterinarian’s Toolkit.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (USDA-APHIS) Veterinarian’s Toolkit is an online resource developed by veterinarians for veterinarians. It provides a myriad of information including a detailed guide to how NAIS works and resources to help communicate its importance and benefits to producers.

Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, Honored With American Diabetes Association’s Distinguished Service Achievement Award

The American Diabetes Association, the nation’s largest and leading voluntary health organization in the fight against diabetes, announced that Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, received the Association’s prestigious C. Everett Koop Medal for Health Promotion and Awareness at the organization’s Community Volunteer Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting on November 23 in Tampa, Florida.
