ProspectIP Has Agreed Licensing Deals For Two Inventors And Products, A Device That Aims To Prevent (DVT) And A Safety Opener For Glass Vials, UK

A University initiative to commercialise novel business ideas and inventions has secured its first two licensing agreements and attracted a further £400,000 in funding.

De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester, set up ProspectIP following a £2 million pilot funding award from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in 2006. The project has already resulted in the launch of new products under direct contracts with entrepreneurs.

International Workshop Aims To Boost Public Engagement Work In Developing Countries

Public engagement practitioners from across the world are to share skills and experiences at an innovative conference to be held in South Africa, organised by the Wellcome Trust.

The conference – entitled “Science and community: engage to empower” – will take place from 2-5 December at the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies, KwaZulu-Natal. It will bring together practitioners working in the fields of public engagement and communication of biomedical and health research.

Workshop Aims To Help Muslim Leaders In Yemen Address HIV/AIDS, Reduce Stigma

The Interaction in Development Foundation and the United Kingdom-based nongovernmental organization Pogressio in coordination with a local religious council in Sana’a, Yemen, recently held a three-day workshop for 25 Muslim religious leaders and health guides aimed at reducing HIV/AIDS-associated stigma and discrimination, the Yemen Observer reports.

The workshop aimed to increase participants’ ability to help in HIV prevention activities and projects aimed at reducing stigma. The participants received interactive training in handling HIV/AIDS issues and on communicating messages to the public that can help reduce stigma and discrimination. In addition, the participants brainstormed different ways to address HIV/AIDS within their congregations and developed outlines of sermons that discuss HIV/AIDS-related issues.

IFPMA’s Access & Benefit Sharing Guidelines Support CBD Aims

On the occasion of the 9th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9) in Bonn, Germany, 19-30 May 2008, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) and the German Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (VFA) underline their support for the objectives of the CBD, as set out in the Guidelines for IFPMA Members on Access to Genetic Resources and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising out of their Utilization. For the pharmaceutical industry, reliable access to natural resources is important, since potential active pharmaceutical ingredients for medicines can be found in many organisms.
